Coastal Cleaning 2026
9th Grade Students Join Sæplast for Coastal Clean-Up
A lively group of 9th grade students, together with two teachers, took part in a litter collection with Sæplast on June 1, which was Environmental Day at Dalvíkurskóli.
Kristbjörn Sævaldsson and Elías Björnsson led the clean-up on behalf of Sæplast. This was the 9th consecutive year that the clean-up has taken place. The group walked along Sandurinn, from the mouth of the Svarfaðardalsá river all the way west to the southern harbour wall by Sunnutún, collecting visible litter in bags.
Projects like this are important, both for the local environment and for the wider community. By taking part in coastal clean-up work, the students get the opportunity to see first-hand why it matters to prevent plastic and other waste from ending up in nature. This kind of experience helps build environmental awareness, encourages responsibility, and shows that a joint effort can make a real and visible difference.
Litter collection in areas such as Sandurinn also plays an important role in protecting the coastal ecosystem and keeping the area clean and beautiful for residents, visitors, and future generations. It is valuable to see young people take an active part in a project with a clear purpose and a visible positive impact.
Sæplast is a participant in Strandhreinsun Íslands, a 5-year government initiative focused on cleaning Iceland’s coastline of plastic and other waste. Sæplast supports the 9th grade students with a contribution of ISK 120,000 to their travel fund for this year’s participation and encourages them to continue taking good care of the environment wherever they are.

The Power of Controlled Fish Harvesting
For commercial whitefish harvesters, seafood processors, and distribution partners, the ultimate goal is clear: deliver the highest possible quality to the market while protecting bottom-line margins. However, whitefish quality isn't determined at the processing plant gate. It is won or lost during the very first hours on board the vessel.
