Advanced Fish-Handling Systems
Introduction
By implementing advanced fish-handling systems and robust polyethylene containers from Sæplast, Kaia Fisheries—an Alaskan cod operation—achieved remarkable gains in quality, operational efficiency, and sustainability. The strategic collaboration with Kapp ehf and Sæplast helped revolutionize how the F/V Kaia manages catch onboard, leading to higher-value seafood, reduced waste, and better preservation across the supply chain.
Background
Founded by Erik and Lacey Velsko, Kaia Fisheries LLC operates the F/V Kaia in the cold, demanding waters of Alaska. The goal: bring fresh, high-quality cod to market by rethinking every step from catch to offload. In late 2024, the team sought to improve freshness, reduce degradation, and increase profitability by investing in better handling and preservation systems. Their vision aligned perfectly with Sæplast’s durable, hygienic container solutions and Kapp ehf’s slurry ice technology.
"Fresh fish. Better prices. Smarter fishing."

Winter 2024 Implementation:
- 100% onboard cod processed with slurry ice
- Damage to catch reduced dramatically
- Buyers report significant improvement in quality
- Enhanced market value for premium fillets

The Problem
Traditional handling practices aboard small vessels often compromise quality—gutting delays, limited cooling options, and fragile containers allow rapid spoilage. The Velskos recognized these limitations firsthand. With increased demand for fresher fish and sustainable practices, Kaia Fisheries needed a solution that balanced speed, durability, and hygiene.
The Solution
Working with Kapp ehf and Sæplast, Kaia Fisheries implemented two core improvements:
1. Slurry Ice System
Rapid onboard cooling preserves cod freshness, texture, and extends shelf life.
2. Sæplast Polyethylene Containers
- Triple-wall insulated design for cold retention
- Durable construction to protect delicate whitefish
- Ergonomic, stackable, and easy-to-clean form
- Reduced handling damage from sea to shore
“The combination of slurry ice and rugged Sæplast totes allows us to deliver cod that buyers immediately recognize as premium quality.”
— Erik Velsko, Owner, F/V Kaia
The Results
✔ Exceptional product quality: Buyers now report noticeable improvements in freshness and consistency.
✔ Higher value at market: The superior product fetches better prices, making sustainability profitable.
✔ Operational efficiency: Less handling, faster chilling, and easier offloading all streamline the process.
✔ Longer shelf life: With less degradation, the product reaches customers in better condition.
