Origin

Our roots can be traced back to a colourful fishing village in Iceland.

Sæplast's roots can be traced back to Dalvik, a colourful fishing village in Northern Iceland.  Sæplast was founded in 1984, driven by demand from the Icelandic seafood community. As a response to local requirements, the Sæplast team developed double-walled insulated plastic tubs to extend the quality lifetime of fish.

Overlooking the local harbour and the deep fjord of Eyjafjörður, the Sæplast team constructed a product that revolutionized the handling of seafood and improved the safety of the fishermen.

Sæplast is part of Rotovia.  Rotovia is a leading international manufacturer built from its Icelandic heritage. The company’s legacy is built on a group of rotational moulding companies who have collaborated for many years. While rotational molding is Rotovia’s core business, the company is also known for bringing innovative products and services to the market under the Sæplast, VARIBOX and Tempra brand names. Rotovia has a strong global footprint with a manufacturing base of ten sites across seven countries and a wide sales network serving diversified customer base across several end-industries, with a specific focus on the food segment.

Growth

Crossing the Atlantic to the shores of Canada

In 1999, Sæplast took a decisive step into North America by acquiring the Dyno Plastics division, including the production facility in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. This long‑standing plant, with roots dating back to the 1980s, brought invaluable local expertise in insulated-container manufacturing under the Sæplast global operating model.

From the outset, the Canadian team integrated regional know‑how with Sæplast’s proven global best practices. Utilizing modern rotational molding techniques, the Saint John site soon became a strategic cornerstone in serving North American markets across seafood, food processing, and recycling industries.

Geographically, the Canadian facility leverages proximity to major maritime and land transport routes—mirroring the advantages of our La Cañiza facility in Spain—and significantly enhanced Sæplast’s logistical agility and customer responsiveness.

Just as in Dalvík and La Cañiza, the North American operation has embodied Sæplast’s unwavering commitments to safety, quality, and sustainability—solidifying our reputation as the world leader in high‑performance insulated plastic containers

Europe Expansion

Strengthening our presence in Southern Europe

Sæplast expanded its manufacturing footprint to Spain in 2000, establishing a production site in La Cañiza, close to the port city of Vigo. This region has long been a hub for fishing and food processing, making it a natural fit for Sæplast’s insulated container expertise.

From the beginning, the Spanish team has combined local know-how with Sæplast’s global best practices. Operating with modern rotational molding technology, the plant quickly became a cornerstone for serving Southern Europe and beyond, ensuring customers across seafood, meat, and recycling industries could rely on durable, high-quality containers.

The location’s proximity to major sea and land routes has strengthened Sæplast’s ability to connect efficiently with both national and international clients. Just as in Dalvik and Saint John, the Spanish operation reflects the same core values of safety, quality, and sustainability that define Sæplast worldwide.
